I've been playing with a toothpick on a few recent paintings. Which means that my essential art tools are now a toothpick and a wadded up paper towel.

Now With More Color

I'm playing with a few new ideas on this one, especially multiple applications of water to distort existing dried paint. Hopefully the paper holds up to my abuse.

The second picture is a detail of the first. It shows one of the reasons I love watercolor so much - for all the planning and patience in the world, a stray drop of water on the brush can completely transform the color and feel of something. If I wanted to I could rework this part of the painting, but often I prefer to go with the flow. Because it's water, and it flows. Get it? So clever.

If You Trace It Back...

This is probably the painting that influenced me most to start playing with watercolor and ink 15 years ago. I even did my own copy of the piece once and still marvel at how such a small image can carry so much emotion.

I have this edition of the book but don't know the name of the artist, or else I would happily give them full credit.

Cupcakes In Love
